Sam Hughes was a Welsh immigrant who came to Tucson as a young child. Sam never attended a day of formal school but by hard work and effort became a successful merchant here during the California gold rush years. Sam Hughes was a man of vision and in the early 1870's he helped incorporate the City of Tucson and served on the first Tucson City Council. In 1871 Sam helped establish a public education system in the Territory of Arizona
Sam Hughes died in 1917 and several years later a new elementary school in Tucson was names after him. The Sam Hughes District surrounds that very same school from so many years ago.
Driving Directions: The Sam Hughes District is adjacent to the University of Arizona in downtown Tucson. The boundaries are loosely described as; Speedway on the North, Broadway on the South, Campbell on the West and Country Club on the East.
